Vital wetlands of the Palaeolithic at the Ioannina basin
\nKastritsa cave<\/p>\n

Surface collections of lithic toolkits from various locations in the extended and complex Ioannina basin, the largest of inland Epirus, leave no doubt that this resourceful ecosystem, with the lake Pamvotis at its core, was at least initially used by hunter gatherers of the Middle Palaeolithic, most probably Neanderthals (c. 150.000-40.000 years ago).
\nThe archaeological datasets become more prominent in relation to the social and economic management networks of modern humans (Homo sapiens). The main record consists of thousands of finds (e.g. animal bones, tools etc.) excavated below the overhang of a cave, at the base of Kastritsa hill, in the eastern subasin. Occupation started at around 24.000 lasting up to perhaps 13.000 years ago, a period of considerable ecological changes (most recent expansion of icecaps followed by the amelioration of climate regimes). This unquestionably focal place of reference in the palaeolithic cultural landscapes of Epirus lies in due proximity to animal migrating routes, inherently prone to change and unpredictability, but close also to vital, then more extensive, wetlands around the lake, one of the oldest in the European Continent.<\/p>\n

Except over the highly adverse winter conditions, palaeolithic communities made good use of the shelter between late spring and well into the autumn. Groups of restricted or of mixed social composition (age or genderwise) cooperated in order to locate and schedule the capturing and the intensive exploitation of prey, effectively \u201ctransforming\u201d the lake and its periphery into a \u201ctool\u201d.<\/p>\n

A highly valued target was diachronically the red deer. A game conforming to a \u201cmobile general store\u201d. It provided, apart from dietary elements, critical raw materials, like hide and antler. These demanded complicated and time-consuming processing (e.g. cleaning, soaking) in direct association with ample water availability. For instance, from such provisions the palaeolithic craftsmen or women enriched their gear, otherwise manufactured mainly from stones, so as to meet various everyday needs.
\nIn addition, along the muddy marshlands hunting parties hemmed in animals highly dependent on regular water intake: gracile horses, mostly mares with their young, and stoutly built archaic cattle. Also, around reed beds they trapped aquatic birds, useful and for their plumage. For instance, colourful feathers from fish eating great crested grebes, that still live in the lake environment today, would have been used not only in weaponry (e.g. for enhancing arrow aerodynamics) but also as symbolic paraphernalia, like when attached to garments or the body.<\/p>\n

Conceivably, the lake ichthyofauna was not spared either; at least if, we hypothesize, hunting of ungulates did not end as expected.
\nIn tandem, the foragers while excursing in the varied micro-habitats of the basin would have been collecting wood fuel (from the ever-present sylvan pockets) for kindling their hearths – remnants of which were located in the cave\u2019s infill- as well as edible fruits, nuts etc. However, for these foodstuffs there is no apt evidence so far.
\nMaterial culture remains from Kastritsa cave are exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Ioannina as part of the thematic section on the palaeolithic societies of Epirus.<\/p>\n
